YNAB UK Bank Sync: What to Do When Your Bank Is Missing

YNAB already supports selected UK banks. Learn how to investigate a missing connection and when BankSync’s early-access YNAB feed may fit your GBP plan.

YNAB does support UK bank connections. The useful question is whether it supports your bank, your banking entity and your account type.

If your current account is missing, or an existing connection stops importing, first establish whether you are dealing with a coverage gap or a connection fault. BankSync's YNAB feed is another route to assess for supported accounts, once the destination is enabled for your workspace.

Does YNAB work with UK banks?

Yes. The United Kingdom appears in YNAB's official European Direct Import coverage. This is selective coverage, not a promise that every UK institution or product connects.

If YNAB's existing bank connection works well for you, there is no need to add another service simply because one is available. Start by looking at the account that is causing the problem: is the institution absent, is a particular account missing, or have transactions stopped arriving?

Those situations need different next steps.

Diagnose the gap before changing your import method

The bank is not listed. Try the institution's exact name and the relevant personal or business banking entity. Use YNAB's bank-search guidance and suggestion option if you still cannot find it.

The bank connects, but an account is absent. Confirm that you selected it during consent. Account-type availability can differ from institution-level coverage, so a working current account does not prove a savings product or card will also appear.

The account worked before. Look at the connection warning and YNAB's service status before setting up a replacement. A temporary import issue is different from a bank that is unsupported.

Only recent purchases are missing. Check whether they are still pending. A card payment displayed in the banking app is not necessarily available as a posted transaction.

This short diagnosis helps you avoid solving a temporary delay by introducing a second stream of the same transactions.

When BankSync may fit a UK YNAB workflow

BankSync is worth checking when your exact account is available through BankSync and you want to keep using your existing YNAB plan.

The UK bank connection guide describes a Salt Edge Open Banking connection. You search for the bank, review the disclosure and approve read-only access through your bank's pages.

In BankSync, go to Banks → Connect a new bank, enter the bank name and narrow the country to United Kingdom if needed. Personal and business entities may appear separately. After authorisation, check that the intended account appears and the connection is active.

Coverage should be checked at the time you connect. A familiar bank logo or a large total institution count is not enough to establish that a particular account can feed your plan.

Set up BankSync with a GBP YNAB plan

Once the YNAB destination is enabled, use the documented connection process:

  1. Open the relevant feed and select Destination. Choose YNAB.
  2. Approve access in YNAB. Sign in through the popup and authorise the plan BankSync may use.
  3. Confirm the plan currency. A GBP bank account needs a GBP YNAB plan. BankSync does not perform currency conversion.
  4. Open Mapping. Match each bank account to an existing YNAB account, create a new account, or choose Don't send.
  5. Check the account type. If creating an account, review the suggested type before pressing Create.
  6. Choose where the feed begins. Use Today for a fresh starting point, or deliberately select available history.
  7. Review the first sync in YNAB. Check the account, payees, amounts and balance, then categorise and approve the entries.

The connection belongs to the BankSync workspace. Editors in that workspace can send transactions to the connected plan, so use a workspace whose members should have that access.

Switching from YNAB Direct Import without overlapping feeds

Do not run Direct Import and a BankSync feed into the same YNAB account at the same time. BankSync's documentation also advises against combining its feed with File Import on that account.

A practical switch starts with a reviewed register and a clear handover point. Unlink Direct Import on the destination account, select that existing account in BankSync and start from today. Review the boundary for entries already present, especially if today's transactions were previously imported.

Using an existing YNAB account preserves its current balance. Creating a new account is a different choice: BankSync adds a Starting Balance during the first sync. Do not create another account merely to work around a connection warning without considering what it means for your plan.

Stable BankSync import IDs protect repeated BankSync syncs from duplicate imports. They do not remove duplicates caused by overlapping import methods.

What happens to standing orders, transfers and pending card payments?

A posted standing order is delivered as a transaction when the bank makes it available. You still review its category in YNAB.

A transfer between your current and savings accounts arrives as two independent entries. BankSync does not automatically connect them as a YNAB transfer, so review the pair in your plan.

Pending card transactions are never sent to the YNAB destination. This is different from general-purpose BankSync feeds that may offer other pending-transaction settings. Waiting for the final posted record keeps this particular import workflow predictable.

Keep an eye on bank consent expiry too. Use the expiry and renewal information shown in BankSync for your connection; reconnecting the bank and reconnecting YNAB solve different problems.

Keep the plan you already use

If there is a genuine coverage gap, confirm BankSync's bank support and YNAB access before changing your setup. Then connect one account, review the first import and expand from there.
