How to Get Bank Transactions into Google Sheets Automatically (2026)

Google Sheets has no built-in bank feed. Compare the five real ways to get transactions in: CSV exports, Apps Script, Zapier or Make with Plaid, Sheets add-ons like Tiller, BudgetSheet and BankToSheets, and BankSync.

Hand-drawn bank data river crossed by five routes that converge in a spreadsheet ledger

Updated September 2026

To get bank transactions into Google Sheets automatically, connect your bank through a bank-data service that writes rows to your sheet on a schedule. Sheets has no built-in bank feed, so your options are manual CSV exports, a custom Apps Script or Zapier build on a bank API such as Plaid, or a ready-made add-on or sync service.

Below, each route is compared on setup effort, cost, how automatic it is, and which banks it reaches. Third-party prices and coverage were checked on each vendor's own site in September 2026.

Can you connect a bank account to Google Sheets directly?

Not on its own. Google Sheets can import files and call web APIs, but it cannot log in to your bank. Something has to sit in between: you downloading files, your own code talking to a bank-data API, or a service that writes to your sheet for you.

How do I import a bank CSV into Google Sheets?

The free, manual route works with almost any bank:

  1. Export transactions from online banking as CSV for a date range.
  2. In Google Sheets, choose File > Import, upload the file, and pick Append to current sheet.
  3. Remove any overlap with the previous export so you do not double-count.

It costs nothing and gives no third party access to your bank. But it is never automatic, column layouts differ between banks, and de-duplicating overlapping exports by hand is where many spreadsheet budgets quietly break.

Can Google Apps Script pull bank transactions automatically?

Apps Script can run on a time-driven trigger and call a web API with UrlFetchApp, so it can automate the writing. It cannot reach your bank without a bank-data API behind it, which means handling an aggregator's credentials and tokens yourself and maintaining the script. It suits developers who want full control.

Can Zapier or Make connect Plaid to Google Sheets?

Plaid is the bank-data network behind many US and Canadian finance apps, which is why "Plaid Google Sheets" is a common search. But Plaid is a developer API, not a consumer app: its quickstart has you create API keys, run Plaid Link, and exchange a public token for an access token on a backend server. As of September 2026 Zapier does not list a Plaid app, so a no-code Zap cannot talk to Plaid directly.

The working pattern is your own small server handling Plaid, posting new transactions to a Zapier or Make webhook that appends rows to Sheets. It is flexible, but you pay for the automation platform, need Plaid production access, and own the code.

Which Google Sheets add-ons import bank transactions automatically?

Several products do the integration work for you. From their own sites:

  • Tiller connects banks through Yodlee and Plaid and imports data daily into Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, with a Foundation Template, AutoCat categorisation and a daily "Hello, Money" email. It costs $99/year after a 30-day free trial, and its FAQ says it supports US-based banks only.
  • BudgetSheet is a Google Sheets add-on that uses Plaid for 10,000+ US and Canadian institutions and imports transactions nightly. Plans run from $6/month or $59/year (up to 5 accounts) to $20/month or $149/year (up to 100 accounts), with a 15-day trial and no card required.
  • BankToSheets uses Plaid and syncs transactions and balances into Google Sheets daily for $5/month after a two-week trial. Its homepage does not state which countries it supports.
  • Finta is a sync service rather than an add-on. It writes to Google Sheets, Notion, Airtable and Coda, covers the US, Canada, the UK and Europe through Plaid and GoCardless, and starts at $70/year after a 7-day trial.

All of these are read-only: they import data but cannot move money.

How does BankSync sync bank transactions to Google Sheets?

BankSync connects to banks through regulated open-banking routes: Plaid in the US and Canada (11,000+ banks and credit unions), the Consumer Data Right via Fiskil in Australia, and UK Open Banking via Salt Edge. You create a feed that sends a bank's transactions to a sheet, and BankSync appends new rows on a schedule, skipping transactions it has already written.

Set up a BankSync feed to Google Sheets

  1. Install the add-on or sign up

Install BankSync from the Google Workspace Marketplace or start a 14-day trial at banksync.io. A card is collected but not charged during the trial.

  2. Connect your bank

Sign in through the provider's own secure window (Plaid, Fiskil or Salt Edge). BankSync never sees your bank password.

  3. Choose a Google Sheet

Pick the spreadsheet and tab, and map the columns you want.

  4. Pick a schedule

Starter runs weekly, Standard adds daily, and Professional and above unlock hourly. Sync Now works on every plan.

The first sync backfills up to 7 years of history in Australia, up to 2 years in the US and Canada, and up to 90 days in the UK; individual banks vary.

The same bank data can also go to Notion, Excel (a workbook on OneDrive), Airtable, Postgres or MySQL, and webhooks, and to AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT through BankSync's MCP server on Standard and above. Pricing starts at $5/month, or $4/month billed annually, for one bank connection. See the Google Sheets sync page and pricing.
