Monzo and personal API access
Monzo has a Developer API, but it reads your own account only, its access tokens are short-lived, and Monzo says it is not for building public apps.
That suits a script that only ever reads Monzo. BankSync reads Monzo through UK Open Banking instead, alongside every other UK bank you connect, with one scoped key and one JSON shape.
You approve access in Monzo’s own app or website, and the data comes through Salt Edge, an FCA-authorised account information service provider (AISP). Your key reads it back as JSON, alongside every other UK bank you connect.

Frequently asked questions
Does Monzo offer a personal API?
Partly. Monzo’s Developer API reads your own account only, with short-lived tokens, and is not for public apps. BankSync reads Monzo through UK Open Banking via an FCA-authorised AISP, alongside your other UK banks.
What data can I read from my Monzo accounts?
Transactions and balances, read-only, as JSON. The first sync reaches back up to 60 days; from then on BankSync keeps adding new transactions, so your history grows for as long as the connection stays active.
How long does consent last?
UK open banking access lasts 180 days. When it ends, reconnect from the app and approve again at Monzo. You can withdraw access at any time from Monzo or from BankSync.
Is the API read-only?
Yes. The connection your bank grants is read-only: BankSync can read account data, and it cannot move money, make payments or change anything at your bank. Your API key reads the same data, scoped to the permissions you give it.
Can I use my Monzo data with Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes. The same read-only data is available over BankSync’s MCP server: point Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor at it and ask about your Monzo transactions in plain English. It is included from the Standard plan.
