Plaid for Google Sheets
Plaid connects your bank. BankSync is the application on the other side of it, writing transactions, balances, holdings and loan data straight into your spreadsheet on a schedule you set — no Apps Script, no developer account, no manual export.
Why you can’t plug Plaid into a spreadsheet yourself
Plaid is the data network between your bank and the apps you use. That little window listing every bank, the one a budgeting app opens when you link an account, is Plaid Link. It is good infrastructure — and it is sold to businesses, not to people.
There is no Plaid login for consumers, no Plaid dashboard of your spending, and no Plaid add-on in the Google Workspace Marketplace. Getting your own data out would mean registering as a developer, building an application, passing production review, and then maintaining the code that turns API responses into rows.
BankSync is that application. We hold the Plaid relationship and hand you the part you wanted: bank data in Google Sheets, on a schedule, in your columns. You sign in inside Plaid Link as you would anywhere else, and the access stays read-only — see the bank feed or the security page.
How it works
Get started in minutes. No technical setup required.
Connect through Plaid Link
Search for your bank, sign in inside Plaid’s own window, and pick the accounts you want. Your credentials never touch BankSync.
Map your columns
Choose the spreadsheet and tab, then map date, amount, description, category and the rest onto the columns you already use.
Set the schedule
Hourly, daily or weekly depending on your plan, plus a manual “Sync Now” on every plan. New transactions appear as new rows.
Everything you need in Google Sheets
From transactions to advanced tracking, sync all your financial data to Google Sheets spreadsheets.
Transactions, including pending
Card purchases, deposits and transfers from checking, savings and credit-card accounts. Pending transactions are supported, and every row is keyed on the provider’s id, so re-runs never duplicate it.
Balances
Current balances for deposit, credit-card and investment accounts, written as a snapshot each run so your sheet builds its own history.
Holdings and trades
Investment accounts return positions and activity rather than a transaction feed — a different product at Plaid, and its own feed in BankSync.
Loans and credit lines
Mortgages, student loans and credit-card liabilities arrive as point-in-time records, so payoff progress sits beside your spending in one workbook.
Plaid covers the US and Canada
One product, four providers. Which one carries your bank depends on where the bank is.
United States & Canada
Plaid. Big banks, regionals, neobanks and credit unions — see the US coverage page or Canada, and search your own bank in the institution directory.
United Kingdom & Australia
Not Plaid. UK banks connect through Salt Edge under Open Banking, and Australian banks through Fiskil under the Consumer Data Right. The European Union is a waitlist today. Everything downstream — feeds, mapping, schedules — is the same.
Plaid API plus Apps Script, honestly compared
A real option, and for a developer a fun weekend. Here is what the weekend contains.
| What it takes | Plaid API + Apps Script | BankSync |
|---|---|---|
| Getting access to Plaid | Register as a Plaid developer and pass production review before one real account connects. | Done already. BankSync is the registered application; you click “Connect a bank”. |
| Writing to the sheet | An Apps Script project, an OAuth client, a timed trigger, and code that turns responses into rows. | Pick the spreadsheet and tab, map fields to your columns, choose By Row or By Column. |
| Duplicate rows | Your own dedupe logic, plus handling for pending rows that later settle. | Records are keyed on the provider’s unique id, so retries and overlaps are safe. |
| Keeping it running | Cursor state, webhooks, re-authentication when a bank drops out, Apps Script quotas. | Scheduled runs, reconnect prompts and job history ship with the product. |
| Where credentials live | Your Plaid secret and access tokens sit in script properties you own. | You never handle a token. AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit. |
| Cost | A commercial agreement with Plaid, billed to you, plus your engineering time. | From $5/month after a 14-day free trial. |
Prefer an API to a spreadsheet? The same connections are readable through the REST API, and the Google Sheets integration docs cover the destination side.
Frequently asked questions
Is BankSync affiliated with Plaid?
No. BankSync is a Plaid customer, not a Plaid product or reseller, and this page is not endorsed by Plaid. Plaid is a trademark of Plaid Inc. BankSync holds the developer relationship and uses it to move your data into Google Sheets on your behalf.
Is the Plaid connection read-only?
Yes. BankSync can only read your financial data: it cannot move money, change account settings or passwords, or apply for products. You sign in inside Plaid Link — Plaid’s own window, never in BankSync — so BankSync never sees or stores your bank password.
How often does my Google Sheet update?
Choose hourly, daily, or weekly automatic syncs based on your plan, or run a manual sync at any time. Hourly is Professional and Business, Standard adds daily, Starter runs weekly or monthly. Rows appear once Plaid has made the data available.
How far back does the first sync go?
The first run backfills the history the provider will return, and the ceiling is set by the market, not by your plan: Australia up to 7 years (Fiskil (AU)), United States and Canada up to 2 years (Plaid (US)), and United Kingdom up to 90 days (SaltEdge (UK)). Individual banks still vary, and long backfills run in 7-day chunks. Balances, holdings and loans are point-in-time, so their history starts at your first sync.
Does it work with Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo?
Yes. Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One and U.S. Bank are live, along with regionals, neobanks and credit unions — 11k+ institutions across every market BankSync serves. Capital One credit cards have limited support because of issuer policy; checking and savings work normally.
Can I use this outside the United States?
Yes, but not through Plaid. Plaid covers the United States and Canada. UK banks connect through Salt Edge under Open Banking and Australian banks through Fiskil under the Consumer Data Right; the European Union is a waitlist today. The Google Sheets setup is identical in every market.
Can the same data go to Excel, Notion or Airtable?
Yes. Google Sheets, Excel, Notion, Airtable, webhooks, PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB are live destinations. One feed writes one data type to one destination, so the same accounts going to a spreadsheet and a database means two feeds.
What does it cost?
Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial. A card is collected at signup and is not charged during the trial; cancel any time before it ends. Plans start at $5/month, and the cadence you want decides the tier.
