The Model Context Protocol (MCP) finally bridges the gap between AI assistants and real financial data. Connect BankSync MCP and you can stop asking your AI to guess — and start asking it questions backed by your actual bank data.
Here are 10 genuinely useful questions to try once you’re connected.
1. “How much did I spend on [category] last month?”
This is the most obvious one — and the most immediately useful. BankSync enriches transactions with merchant categories, so Claude can accurately total up dining, groceries, subscriptions, travel, or any other category.
Try: “Show me my top 5 spending categories for the last 3 months with monthly averages.”
2. “What are all my recurring subscriptions?”
Most people are surprised by what they find here. Recurring charges from streaming services, SaaS tools, gym memberships, and forgotten free trials that converted to paid — they all show up as repeating transaction patterns.
Try: “Find all my recurring monthly charges and total them up. Flag any I haven’t used recently based on transaction frequency.”
3. “What’s my current net worth?”
With bank accounts, savings, investments, and loans all connected, Claude can calculate your net worth in real time. Assets minus liabilities — live, without a spreadsheet.
Try: “Calculate my current net worth. Break it down by asset type and show how it’s changed over the last 6 months.”
4. “Did any unusual transactions happen this week?”
AI is good at spotting anomalies. Ask Claude to flag anything unusual — unexpected merchants, amounts significantly higher than usual, or charges at odd hours.
Try: “Review my transactions from the last 7 days and flag anything that seems unusual or that I might want to review.”
5. “How does my spending compare to last month?”
Month-over-month comparisons require querying two date ranges and comparing category totals. Tedious manually, trivial for Claude with live transaction data.
Try: “Compare my total spending this month versus last month, broken down by category. Where did I spend significantly more or less?”
6. “What are my investment holdings right now?”
If you have brokerage accounts connected, BankSync syncs your holdings — stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and their current values. Claude can analyze your allocation, concentration risk, and performance.
Try: “Show me my current investment holdings and their allocation percentages. Am I too concentrated in any single sector or stock?”
7. “Show me all transactions from [merchant]”
Every Amazon charge, every Uber Eats order, every charge from a specific vendor for expense reporting. The list_transactions tool accepts merchant filters that Claude uses automatically.
Try: “Show me every transaction from Amazon in the last 12 months, sorted by amount. What’s my total Amazon spend for the year?”
8. “Am I on track for my savings goal this month?”
Claude can look at your income deposits versus spending so far this month and project whether you’re on pace. Useful mid-month as a quick sanity check.
Try: “I’m trying to save $1,500 this month. Based on my income and spending so far, am I on track? What’s my projected savings at current pace?”
9. “What’s my current outstanding debt?”
With loan accounts connected, Claude can summarize your total outstanding debt — credit cards, student loans, auto loans, mortgage — and suggest payoff prioritization by interest rate.
Try: “List all my outstanding debts with current balances and tell me which I should prioritize paying off based on interest rate.”
10. “Build me a budget based on my last 3 months of spending”
Instead of manually categorizing transactions to build a budget, ask Claude to analyze 3 months of actual spending and suggest realistic category targets.
Try: “Based on my spending over the last 3 months, create a monthly budget. Show average spend per category and suggest targets for each one.”
